Bazin subjectivity as a human hand intervened cast a shadow of doubt over the image is unavoidable.12/6/2023 ![]() Having desired from an early age to be a teacher, he entered training college, finishing his studies in 1941 at the école normale supérieure at Saint-Cloud. He was born on 18 April 1918 in Angers in north-west France. In one of his essays from the 40s Bazin projected that distant day when film studies would enter the university curriculum – and it was Bazin more than anyone else who played the role of midwife. While scattered attempts had been made before to define the ‘essence’ of cinema (most notably in the works of Rudolf Arnheim and Siegfried Kracauer), Bazin’s ideas were to prove the decisive ones in establishing its credentials as a separate and legitimate field of intellectual enquiry. It’s no exaggeration to say that Bazin is the single thinker most responsible for bestowing on cinema the prestige both of an artform and of an object of knowledge. The prophecy was amply fulfilled, though (as is often the case with prophecies) not quite in the way Renoir had imagined. 2018’s Cinema Rediscovered festival, running 26–29 July at the Watershed, Bristol, will celebrate André Bazin’s centenary with a special season of screenings and talks, Bazin 100 – Qu’est-ce que le cinema?, and a two-day talent development workshop for early-career writers, bloggers, video essayists/vloggers and podcasters, featuring input from seversal Sight & Sound writers and editors.
